ATLANTA —

Atlanta police detectives are investigating human remains that have been found at a home in southwest Atlanta.

Channel 2′s Ryan Young looked on as teams of investigators went to the backyard of a home on Cascade Drive in a quiet neighborhood, trying to figure out how the remain got there, and who they might be.

For more than eight hours Thursday homicide units lined the street while K-9 units tracking units worked the backyard as detectives looked to find clues and neighbors watched from a distance.

Derrick Ware told Young officers started digging at the home early Thursday morning.

“Just started today. Doesn’t scare me. This is a real safe neighborhood,” Ware said.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner also turned up to get an onsite briefing about what officers found.

“We were in the area following up on a missing person’s reports during the course of our investigation it led us to this particular location,” said Lt. Paul Guerrucci with the Atlanta Police Department said.

Detectives dug up parts of the backyard and several teams went inside the house. But so far with this investigation still in the early stages, Young sources told him the work will continue for days.

“We did in fact locate what we believe to be human remains. At this point in the investigation we are not releasing any names. It may be some time before we are able to positively ID those remains. It may have to be through DNA or various other means based on the various stages of decomposition on the body,” Guerrucci said.

Over the next few hours several teams of detectives will spread out and make calls on the clues they have found.

The body will be taken to the medical examiner’s office to be identified.
